さて、今週のビッグニュースは、科学雑誌ニュートンを発行していたニュートンプレス社が、前社長が逮捕されるという衝撃的なニュースののち、民事再生手続開始の申立てを行っていたことが明らかになりました。

私は1982年以来の定期購読者ですので、ショックなニュースでした。また、生命科学を学んだことある方々にとっては、教科書「細胞の分子生物学」の翻訳版はどうなるのか、気になると思います。どうやらニュートンは刊行継続のようですが、「細胞の分子生物学」はどうなるでしょうか。
時々iPADでの教材開発の出資金募集の手紙が来ていましたが、一口100万円などという高額のものでしたので、無視していました。それが前社長逮捕のきっかけになるとは…
1980年代前半にビジュアル総合科学雑誌ブームがあったことを覚えている人はいらっしゃるでしょうか。そのきっかけはなんといってもニュートンでした。宇宙を中心とするカラフルなイラスト。故竹内均編集長のキャラクターも魅力的で、小学生の私は夢中になって読んだものです。
同期時に刊行されていたクオーク、オムニ、ウータンなどはあっという間に廃刊、歴史ある科学朝日やその後続のサイアスもなくなって久しい今、生き残った科学雑誌のなかでもっとも元気がいいと思っていたのがニュートンでした。

岩波「科学」、日経サイエンスも読んでいますが、ビジュアルという面ではニュートンが抜きんでいるわけで、若者に科学への興味をもってもらう入口としては相当大きかったのではないかと思います。
かつてはちょっと天文というか宇宙よりでしたが、最近では生命科学も充実してきたように思っていました。なんといってもコンビニで売っていたわけですから。今回の騒動の記事のなかでも４−５万部という数字が出ていました。
でも実態は相当前から経営難だったようです。
インターネットで様々な写真や動画が手に入る今、ビジュアルは売りにはならなかったのでしょうか？そもそも雑誌が売れない今の時代、純粋科学の記事を売って生計をたてることの難しさを感じてしまいます。
科学記事を読むのは、たとえニュートンのような分かりやすい雑誌であっても、ネットの記事であっても根気がいります。スマホでサクサクと情報を消費していくのが主流の時代には、科学記事を売るのは相当に厳しいことなのかもしれません。
そういう状態が、ポスト真実の時代を作ったのでしょうか。
しかし、Yahoo!ニュース個人で私が書いたトランプ政権の動向の記事は100万ページビューを超えました。このYahoo!ニュース個人でも、時々科学の記事が多く読まれています。多少歯ごたえがあっても、科学に関心を持ってくれる層はいるわけです。
雑誌という媒体に陰りがみえたことイコール科学への興味が失われたことではないと信じています。まだまだやれることはある。
ニュートンも今回の危機を乗り越え、時代にあった姿に変わって生き残ることを願っています。
